According to a recent study, contestants from NBC’s reality show, “The Biggest Loser” leave the show with significantly slower metabolisms, making it difficult for the participants to continue losing weight or maintaining healthy weight once they leave “The Biggest Loser.” Some sources state that some of the contestants regain majority of the weight they lose on the show just six years after the reality show concludes.
The study, which was published by Obesity and funded by the National Institutes of Health, examined 14 individuals of the 16 participants who appeared in the eighth season of the show. Researchers found that all participants, with the exception of one, regained much of the weight they has lost while utilizing the diet and exercise programs on “The Biggest Loser.” Out of the 14, five participants returned with weight 1% higher than their original weight.
What is Causing this Rapid Weight Gain and Slower Metabolic Rates?
Sources state that these slowed metabolisms and weight gain occurrences are due to a phenomenon known as metabolic adaption. This means that when a person loses a significant amount of weight, that person’s metabolic rate begins to slow, so they burn less calories while resting. However, after a certain amount of time, that person’s metabolic rate will rise again. This was not the case for many of the contestants. The study proved that, for the most part, these contestants have slower metabolic rates for the entire six-year period following the show.
Bariatric Patients See Greater Long-Term Results
According to research, a group of individuals who had undergone gastric bypass has also experienced significant metabolic adaption six month following surgery. However, they did not experience metabolic adaption one year after surgery but continued to lose weight.
